New technologies

Compostella

abstract imageCompostella is a disruptive technology which permits position to be measured with extremely high precision at very low cost. The system is physically small and highly configurable, with few limitations on mounting.

Funded by the Scottish Enterprise Proof of Concept fund, Compostella will be the first single device capable of measuring in 6 axes.

Interferometry is the current ‘gold standard’ in position measurement and the ‘Compostella’ device can be easily integrated with existing lower end systems to provide the equivalent of interferometry performance at a fraction of the cost. The precision measurement market is large, global and growing. Position measurement is a key task in all areas of modern technology with a market valued at billions of dollars.

Compostella will enable position to be measured with extremely high precision at very low cost. The system is physically small and highly configurable, with few limitations on mounting.

Applications

This system will be of interest to all users of microscope and optics stages. These are used in scientific research as well as by manufacturers of consumer electronics, machine tools, robotics and the automotive, astronomical, semiconductor, life and health sciences, defence and aerospace sectors.

Early stage discussions with industry have identified a whole range of applications in various market sectors, for example, failure analysis in civil engineering, aeronautics, turbines and forestry industries.

We believe the device will provide benefits in laser system alignment, beam steering systems, communications, and optical system assembly alignment in the optics sector.

Current Status

A prototype system is currently being developed to provide precision measurement for microscope and optics stages which are used in scientific research as well as in many areas of industry. The intellectual property behind Compostella is also the subject of a current patent application 'Position Determination System and Method', GB application number 0815514.5
