Yushin Toda, International Business Liaison Manager (Japan), Innovation Network
Yushin joined R&E in August 2006. As International Business Liaison Manager he is responsible for developing academic and business relations with Asia, the Middle East and Africa in general and with Japan in particular. He co-ordinates the activities of the Europe-Japan Centre from R&E, including the organisation of the Europe-Japan Dialogue public lecture series.
Yushin came to R&E from Law, Business and Social Sciences where he was Administrator of the Europe-Japan Social Science Research Centre from August 1998 until July 2006. After studying at Waseda University and Osaka University of Foreign Studies (now Faculty of Foreign Studies, Osaka University) , with a degree from the latter in Indian Studies, he worked as a staff editor on the Weekly Sankei Journal, Japan, for ten and a half years. He volunteered for UNICEF Ethiopia when the country was hit by famine, and worked as a freelance researcher for the Japanese Ministry of Labor and for the Tokyo Broadcasting System before coming to Glasgow to do Development Studies. He has a Diploma in Development Policy and an MPhil in Agricultural Policy Analysis, both from Glasgow University.
Yushin’s voluntary activities include Japanese Matsuri for Glasgow (a recognised Scottish Charity), which organises Matsuri (a festival in Japanese) in Glasgow twice a year and Taiko (Japanese drumming) Workshops prior to these festivals, and Japan Desk Scotland, which runs Saturday Japanese Classes and A Season of Contemporary Japanese Films. For his University work and his voluntary activities, Yushin was awarded the Japan Society Award in 2005.
