Faces, bodies, voices

Contributors to the Faces/Voices/Bodies theme are drawn from the Schools of Psychology, Computing Science and the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology (INS).

Professor Pascal Belin - perception and recording of human voices, especially non-speech information.

Dr Roberto Caldara - cross-cultural aspects of face processing and eye-movement capture.

Professor Simon Garrod - theoretical understanding of human social communication, especially gestures and language.

Dr Jamie Hillis - theoretical modelling of human social interaction, largely using game theory.

Dr Rob Jenkins - face perception and social interaction, especially face recognition.

Lukasz Piwek - perception and capture of human movement.

Professor Frank Pollick - perception and capture of human movement.

Professor Philippe Schyns - face perception, especially facial expressions.

Dr J Paul Siebert - computer vision for 3D and 2D sensing, analysis and display applied to cognitive robot vision systems, clinical assessment of surface anatomy and visual processing of creative media.

Dr David Simmons - visual perception; particular interest in visual appearance, especially applied to faces, and sensory processing in social interaction. Find out more about the Social Interactions project.

Inter-theme Links

In addition to the identified interests there are a number of inter-theme links to be aware of:

Security : Dr. Rob Jenkins -  is running a project on recognition of facial identity in collaboration with Dr. Bernd Porr in the School of Engineering; Prof. Frank Pollick and Lukasz Piwek are working on use of CCTV to monitor suspicous behaviour in collaboration with the UK Border Agency and the MoD

Imaging : In addition to the world-leading neuroimaging efforts of the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging , Dr. David Simmons and Dr. Paul Siebert are collaborating with colleagues in Glasgow Dental School on the characterisation of facial differences caused by surgery for cleft-lip and palate

Materials : Dr. David Simmons is a member of Technical Committee TC 1-72 of the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE), which deals with the Measurement of Visual Appearance. His work applies to the characterisation of post-surgical facial scarring but the same techniques are applicable to characterisations of medical implants and prosthetics.

Mobile Systems Engineering : Dr. David Simmons and Prof. Simon Garrod are collaborating with Dr. Rod Murray-Smith on mobile devices to improve navigation skills and enhance social interaction; Dr. David Simmons & Prof. Frank Pollick are also collaborating with Prof. Steve Brewster on a number of interaction design projects.

Biomedical Engineering : Prof. Frank Pollick is collaborating with Dr. Aleksandra Vuckovic on rehabilitation projects.
