Study Skills
University study is much more independent than school learning. We have developed a Study Skills course to equip you with the skills necessary for successful study.
Familiarise yourself with the campus
Students who are prepared and familiar with the surroundings are much more likely to complete the course. Find your way around the campus and find out how everything works.
Introduction to library
The university library is huge! We will show you where to find everything and how the lending systems work.
Preparing for lectures
Most university teaching is delivered by the traditional 50 minute lecture. Experience lectures, learn note-taking techniques and work out what’s best for you.
Preparing for seminars
University learning also relies on small group discussions. You need to prepare in advance for these and will need to contribute to the debate. Lots of the teaching at Summer School will be in seminar group form. Experience and confidence will come with practise!
IT systems and Virtual Learning Environment
IT skills are essential to your study. We will introduce you to the university IT systems and ensure you know the basics. The Summer School is fully involved in using Moodle for lecture notes, forums and assessments.
Academic writing
Study skills classes will show you what’s expected of you in your academic writing, whether it is an essay, lab report or referencing.
Presentations
Presentations are an essential part of academic life. Our tutors will teach you how to effectively present your work.
