BUTTLE UK has worked in partnership with Universities UK, the Standing Conference Of Principles, the Association of Colleges and the Association of Managers of Student Services in Higher Education, to develop a Commitment to Care Leavers in Higher Education. This commitment provides a charter through which higher education providers can demonstrate their commitment to supporting care leavers.

The University of Glasgow was one of the first universities in Scotland to be awarded the BUTTLE UK Quality Mark in recognition of their commitment to working with and supporting care leavers in higher education. The University was awarded the Quality Mark at a ceremony at the University on Tuesday 25th September 2007:

BUTTLE UK's commitment to care leavers in higher education requires higher education institutions to work in the areas of raising aspirations and achievement, having appropriate admissions procedures, providing entry and ongoing support, and monitoring the implementation of the commitment. For more information on the commitment click here.

The Commitment came about as a result of a five-year action research study By Degrees: “From Care to University" commissioned by BUTTLE UK to evaluate the experience of those who had moved to university from care. The final research report, “Going To University From Care” demonstrated that those who succeeded did so against considerable odds, both in terms of pre-entry support and that within their higher education institution.
