Financial Support

student in the libraryMoney is a concern for all current and prospective students.  How you will be supported at university and what you will be entitled to will depend on your circumstances. The university Student Finance pages will help you to clarify what assistance is available to you, and give you tips and tools to help your money go further. If you need any further help then pop into to see one of our Student Advisers or alternatively contact the Care Leaver Support Coordinator.

Financial Support at the University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow has a range of financial support provision for undergraduates. If you have a background in public care or are leaving care you might want to think about applying for a University Care Leaver Bursary. Financial support may also be available through the University's HEI Hardship  & Childcare Fund (Please indicate on the HEI Hardship application form that you are a care leaver). There are also a variety of scholarships and educational loans available.

Tuition Fees and Student Loans

The Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) offers a wide range of support services for eligible Scottish home students. If you are a UK resident you will also be likely to be eligible for a repayable student loan. To find out more information on tuition fees and student loans see the SAAS website.

A student at workLocal Authority Support

As the extracts below make clear if you are looked after or have a background in public care your local authority may well have a policy detailing how they will help you financially towards the cost of your studies (eg. books, accommodation, subistence etc...) Speak to your keyworker, social worker or aftercare team about what support your local authority could provide you. Some local authorities will offer support for your young people who have been looked after or accommodated in full time education up until the age of 24. They should know what your particular entitlements under the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 are. You might want to ask your local authority to see a copy of their policy on the provision of financial support for care leavers.

If you still have any questions or would like some help contacting your local authority contact the Care Leaver Support Coordinator.

Extract from 'Regulations and Guidance on Services for Young People Ceasing to be Looked After by Local Authorities (THE SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE OF YOUNG PEOPLE LEAVING CARE (SCOTLAND) REGULATIONS 2003)'

8.4 Young people who are in further or higher education should be encouraged and supported to continue their studies. As part of this, financial considerations should not affect the young person's wish to continue in education. It is not considered helpful for young people to be expected to take out full student loans and authorities, as corporate parents, will want to provide assistance.
