Accommodation

The University recognises that accommodation is particularly important for young people who are looked after or leaving care. At the University of Glasgow, we shall endeavour to offer care leavers 365 day a year accommodation for the duration of their studies. For more information about what accommodation you may be entitled to, contact the Care Leaver Support Coordinator.

For more information on the different kinds of accommodation offered by the University of Glasgow please see the Residential Services website.

It is important that you apply for university accommodation as soon as possible. To do so, fill in the online application form. Please ensure you read the application process guidelines first. When completing the application, ensure you indicate your background in public care in the 'Additional Information (All Students)' section. If, on application, you are not automatically allocated Category A status, please call Janice Hunter on 0141-330-4743 and explain that you are a care leaver. (If you have any queries about this process or need any assistance contact the Care Leaver Support Coordinator).

Remember - your local authority may be able to help you meet some or all of your accommodation costs while you are in full time education. The following extracts were taken from the Scottish Parliament's guidelines on Supporting Young People Leaving Care in Scotland (2004):

9.9 One of the main worries for young people in further or higher education is their accommodation arrangements during vacations. Local authorities will therefore need to ensure they are aware of the accommodation terms and make arrangements to cover any vacation gap.

9.10 Local authorities should bear in mind the provisions of section 30 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995. This empowers authorities to give financial assistance towards the expenses of education or training of a young person under the age of 21 who at the time of ceasing to be of school age was being looked after by the local authority. Contributions can also be made to the cost of accommodation and maintenance of such a person in any place where he or she may be receiving such education or training. These powers are exercisable until the young person reaches the age of 21 or, if over 21, until they finish the course of education or training. If after they have reached 21, the course is interrupted, assistance may only be continued if they resume the course as soon as practicable.
