The Americas: Professor David Fearn

My work as an International Dean for the AmericasDavid Fearn

This is a challenging role; representing and promoting the whole University across a huge and diverse region. My initial travels in the International Dean role have shown there is enormous scope for developing the University’s relationships and international reach in this region.

Our regional plan which aims to give focus to the University’s activities in the Americas. Partnership development is key, typically building on the wide range of individual links that are already active. Meeting with representatives from other universities visiting Glasgow as well as travelling to their institutions is an important part of the job. Subsequent communicating and liaising with colleagues across the University is fundamental to initiating actions that lead to progress.

Principal’s Early Career Mobility Fund: Glasgow-Columbia

In January 2013 a new fund was launched to support PhD students and post-doctoral researchers from the University of Glasgow to visit or conduct research at Columbia University (New York).

The University of Glasgow enjoys a strong institutional partnership with Columbia University. The Principal’s Early Career Mobility Fund offers financial support for Glasgow PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to take advantage of the considerable resources and opportunities this partnership makes available by spending a period of time at Columbia University.

Successful candidates: April 2013

Congratulations to those PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, who were awarded funding as part of the Principal’s Early Career Mobility Fund. These awards support our partnership agreement with Columbia University, by giving researchers from both institutions the opportunity to work closely together to develop high-impact research themes. The seven candidates represent a broad range of disciplines from across the University, including Law, Business, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Immunology, Education, and Film and Television.

Columbia University is likewise funding three of their PhD Students/Postdocs to undertake research visits to Glasgow. These are in the areas of High Energy Physics, Bioengineering and Earth Sciences.
