East Asia: Professor Jon Cooper
Professor Jon Cooper was appointed the University of Glasgow’s International Dean for East Asia in January 2012.
East Asia International Dean
Professor Cooper has much experience working to develop collaborations in the East Asia and South East Asia including:
- Tianjin and Nankai Universities (China);
- NTU, NCKU and NTHU (Taiwan);
- A*Star and Nanyang Technical University (Singapore);
- Mahidol University (Thailand).
This broad internatonal activities have provided numerous opportunities for the exchange of Post Graduate Students.
Professor Cooper is also the Dean of Graduate Studies (Science and Engineering College Senior Management) and Professor of Bioelectronics and Bioengineering (Biomedical Engineering).

Key partnerships in the region
The University of Glasgow has been working for many years in East Asia and has developed many strong teaching and research partnerships including:
- Confucius Institute - In October 2011 The Confucius Institute for the West of Scotland was officially opened at the University of Glasgow by First Minister Alex Salmond MSP.
- The University of Glasgow has been working closely with Nankai University and Tianjin University. University staff attended a "Glasgow Day" - at Nankai University in 2011.
- Research and teaching relationships with our Universitas 21 partners:
- China: Fudan University; Shanghai Jiao Tong University
- Hong Kong: University of Hong Kong
- Japan: Waseda University
- Korea: Korea University
- For many years Glasgow has been welcoming Study Abroad students from the region. We have a well-established agreement with Waseda University and in 2011 we welcomed a record number of study abroad students from China.
- The University of Glasgow has recently established the Scottish Centre for Chinese Social Science Research, to concentrate our existing expertise in this area and to signal our commitment to research with China.
