U21 Lifelong Learning & Research Workshop14 and 15 May 2012
Lifelong learning driving universities’ ambitions for advanced teaching and research? Dare we? Can we? Let’s!
50 delegates from seven U21 universities and other institutions attended the U21 Lifelong Learning workshop on 14th and 15th May, chaired jointly by Professor Susan Geertshuis (Auckland) and Professor Mike Osborne (Glasgow). U21 participants attended from UBC, UCD, Tec de Monterrey, Nottingham, Queensland, Auckland and Glasgow. The workshop theme of ‘Lifelong Learning driving universities’ ambitions? Dare we? Can we? Let’s!’ reflects recent discussion around the need for universities to recognise their contribution and responsibility to the regions in which they are located. Delegates welcomed Professor Geertshuis’ invitation to challenge perceptions of lifelong learning and to explore and claim a more central role for lifelong learning within university strategy. Workshop participants heard about innovative models to enrich the student body fromGlasgow, Tec de Monterrey and Queensland, as well as examples of successful interface between universities and their local communities through business innovation.
