Background to the Small Animal Hospital

The Small Animal Hospital in Glasgow is one of the busiest in the country currently treating 11,000 cases annually.

It is an acknowledged centre of excellence in Neurology, Oncology, Orthopaedics and Pain and Welfare.  The hospital has been constructed on the University's Garscube Campus in Bearsden and its award winning design, with its sloping grass roof complements its environment.

The old Small Animal Hospital was outdated, cramped and at the end of its useful life, and so our campaign to build a new hospital began.  The aim was to provide a world class teaching centre for veterinary medicine, challenging current concepts of clinical practice, teaching and research and pioneering future standards in animal treatment and welfare.

After more than ten years in the planning the University of Glasgow's new Small Animal Hospital opened in September 2009, thanks in no small part to our supporters.  The patients we treat have always received a high standard of care, but with our new hospital the care and treatment delivered will now be provided in the best surroundings possible.

When patients first arrive at the hospital, they are assessed in one of the thirteen new consulting rooms.  From here they can be moved to any one of a number of specialist areas.  These areas include:

  • A centre for Comparative Oncology - the first in Scotland
  • A unique pain and rehabilitation centre
  • A diagnostic imaging suite complete with MRI scanner and CT scanner
  • Ultra-modern operating theatres complete with cameras to allow remote viewing of procedures for students
  • An endoscopy suite with the most advanced endoscopy equipment available
  • Purpose built wards designed to allow the best nursing care to be delivered

We hope you feel inspired to support our Small Animal Hospital Fund.  Every gift, whatever the size, will go a long way to supporting the vital work carried out in the hospital.
