I am the Chairman of the University of Glasgow Trust. Most charitable donations and bequests to the University now flow through the Trust, whose President is the Chancellor, Professor Sir Kenneth Calman.
While I was studying law at Gilmorehill I was also an apprentice in a solicitors' office in Glasgow. Often I and my fellow apprentice tore up to the 4 o'clock class at the last minute on his very dodgy motorbike. Donald Dewar, John Smith and Ming Campbell were in the same class but I was more interested then in rugby than politics.
In 1984 I was asked to be Clerk to the University's General Council, which is the whole body of the University, undergraduates, graduates and academic staff, headed by the Chancellor. At that time the Trust was inaugurated and the Development and Alumni Office created.
Nearly twenty years later, after retirement from legal practice, I was very happy to renew my connections with the University. I found that millions of pounds were being raised each year for new buildings, scholarships, research fellowships and a host of other leading edge projects. There's a buzz about the place and it's exciting to be involved.
