British Heart Foundation Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre
On Tuesday 25 April, the University of Glasgow was delighted to host Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, to open officially two new major research facilities; the British Heart Foundation Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre and the Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre Sir Graeme Davies Building.
During her visit, HRH met with the Directors of the new Centres and groups of research staff who presented demonstrations of the groundbreaking research underway. In addition, HRH had the opportunity to meet with some of the 1,200 donors, who in joining with the University and the BHF, made the £12M BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre possible.
The BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre enhances Glasgow's track record of research excellence enabling teams of international standing to engage in crucial collaborative work within state of the art facilities. Modern laboratories and a clinical investigation unit enhance the integration of research and clinical practice, so that patients benefit more rapidly from advances in cardiovascular medicine.
The £17M Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre Sir Graeme Davies Building was funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Science Research Investment Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. The facility brings together over 40 leading biomedical research groups working in Structural Biology, Molecular Parasitology and Immunobiology.
Principal of Glasgow University, Sir Muir Russell commented: "We are delighted that Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, who opened our Wolfson Medical School building should complete our triangle of excellence by unveiling these two Centres allowing us the opportunity to show her something of what Glasgow is doing to advance knowledge and better our nation's health."
