Kirstie MacLeod (MA, 2011) "I knew before starting at university that there would be a significant financial strain related to becoming a full time student. My first year scholarship was used to buy a laptop and printer. I hadn't realised before coming to university how essential both of these pieces of equipment are. The main thing about the scholarships is that it rewards students who have already shown their ability and dedication to studying. The scholarship allows capable students to concentrate on their studies rather than worrying about their financial situation." |
Mairead MacLennan (BAcc, 2011) "Receiving the scholarship significantly reduced the financial pressures I faced studying at university. This has allowed me to focus more on my studies and making the most of my time in Glasgow. The difference that a scholarship can make to a student is enormous. A scholarship will undoubtedly improve a student’s time at university allowing them to get more out of the experiences offered and allowing them to focus more on their studies." |

Emilia Weber (MA, 2011) "The courses that I did required a lot of reading material. Additionally, in order to excel in Theatre Studies, I felt that I should be immersed in theatre in Glasgow. Buying tickets to shows was especially expensive. The Talent Scholarship allowed me to be on an even par with my peers and my studies not to suffer as a result of not having enough money, I was able to benefit from having the same opportunities as my peers, buy the same materials as them and go and see plays as they could. I think that allowing students from underprivileged backgrounds to achieve their potential is hugely important. It makes for a fairer education system and a fairer society and also means that dedicated, bright students who wouldn’t be able to come to university are allowed to have an equal opportunity." |
Craig Currie (LLB, 2011) "Receiving the scholarship meant a great deal as it alleviated a great deal of financial pressure that I was starting to feel at university. Receiving the Talent Scholarship had a huge impact on my studies. Living outside of Glasgow and having to travel to university every day can be a big financial burden, however, the scholarship helped to facilitate this. It is also important to consider that the price of course texts can often be higher than expected." |

“I was acutely aware of how fortunate I was, not only to be able to attend university, and continue my education, but to be assisted throughout this period by means of the Talent Scholarship. The scholarship gave me peace of mind and allowed me to focus on learning, instead of being distracted by any monetary fears. In order to further my own employability potential I volunteered at the Citizens Advice Bureau, on a part-time basis. This experience was invaluable to me and the Talent Scholarship allowed it to be possible as I had travel and other costs to cover. I would like to thank anyone that considers making a donation to the Scholarships Fund. In my own experience it has meant that my four years at university has been infinitely less stressful. I have been able to focus on my studies and have access to the materials that I needed. I think there are few things more important than education and the idea that money is the only barrier to pursuing it seems incomprehensible.” |
