Research at SCENE

  • Unique habitats

The habitats bordering SCENE are all of international conservation value with the highest possible conservation designations.

  • An international reputatation

SCENE supports a wide range of research from ornithology and fish biology to aquatic ecosystems, physiological, theoretical and molecular ecology.

  • State of the art facilities

Our new facilities are expanding our research capabilities to continue to understand and protect our environment and work towards the global challenge of reconciling exploitation and conservation.

A unique location for research

As part of the University's College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, SCENE is part of the largest group of life scientists in Europe. The research programmes vary from the highly applied, to the pure 'blue sky' research. Experimental streams and laboratory analysis facilities allow the field-testing of laboratory hypotheses and conclusions to be conducted at the same location. This combination attracts the highest quality of researchers from across the world for research collaboration in a wide range of environmental fields.

An international reputation

During the last four years, more than 100 research papers in international journals have been published and external grant funding in excess of £5 million has been earned. Much of the current research is of international significance but some also has had a local, Scottish impact e.g. studies on the effects of recreational boating and on survival strategies in fish.

State of the art facilities

Our new research wing opened in spring 2007 at a cost of just over £3 million of the total £7 million re-development project. Having the new centre up and running offers the potential to increase the research benefit substantially. With improved amenities for research and additional space for more research staff, this new facility will enable a three-fold increase in the amount of research carried out at SCENE, helping to understand and protect our environment.

You can read about the first year at the SCENE reseach wing in this article in the January 2008 edition of Avenue SCENE January 08 Article.
