SIMply West Highland Walkers

Congratulation and a BIG thanks to SIMply West Highland Walkers who walked the West Highland Way in memory of Wilson Sim. The team have already raised over £5000 for the Beatson Pebble Appeal. Thanks to Gillian, Alison, Susan, Craig, Fraser, Bob and Archie.

On the right track

A group of railway workers produced a 'Calendar Girls' style 2011 calendar late last year and they have been inundated with requests to buy copies!  More than 15 staff got together at the Bo'Ness Railway Museum earlier this year to have their photos taken, and they made good use of all the strategically placed railway memorabilia!  William Stirling, the photographer, said "a few of our colleagues are suffering from cancer so the Beatson Pebble Appeal is a cause close to our hearts.  Sadly two of our colleagues, Alex Stenhouse and Brian Connelly, passed away recently and so it has made us even more determined to make this a success in their memories". 

Munro Climbing

Connal Cochrane is one of our first £1000 challengers.  He climbed 100 Munros in memory of his mum.  Phyllis Cochrane died just over 5 years ago at the age of 59 following a prolonged battle against cancer.  Connal has decided to tackle the Munros to raise £1000 for the Beatson Pebble Appeal.  Connal said "I had been looking to do something personally to move forward in a positive way and my mum loved hillwalking.  It was me who got her enthusiastic about hill walking when I was in my teens.  I am looking forward to continuing with my challenge and I am pleased to be able to contribute to this really worthwhile campaign”. 

Cycling over the Alps

Susan Taylor and Graham Macnair cycled 500km over the Bavarian Alps in support of the Appeal.  Susan said “On the trip we didn't quite anticipate the exhaustion, on one occasion we fell asleep on the dining table before we were served our dinner!  On the last day we did about 130 kilometres, arrived at our final destination and then I fell off my bike and broke my foot!”  They managed to raise almost £2,000 and have been delighted at all the support they received from people.  However, the story didn’t quite end there; Susan says that they found the trip so amazing that they moved to Germany 5 months later!

Coast to Coast Team

Thirty friends from Newcastle and Lanark recently participated in a 145 mile Coast to Coast cycle route from Whitehaven to Tynemouth to raise money for the Beatson Pebble Appeal and the Bobby Robson Foundation.  In true Coast to Coast tradition, the group began by dipping the back wheel of their bikes in the Irish Sea at Whitehaven and only finished when their front wheel entered the North Sea at Tynemouth! The cycle was a three day endurance test in which they reached heights of over 2000 feet!  The group raised over £7,000 and would like to thank everyone that was involved in the event for their brilliant support and kind donations.

Charity Recipe Book

The Think Pink Scotland ladies are well known to our supporters and have raised over £150k for breast cancer research at the University.  Their latest venture, a collection of recipes, has been selling well and has raised £xxxx so far.  Fantastic Recipes for a Fantastic Cause features over 100 recipes from celebrity contributors such as Gordon Ramsay, Loyd Grossman, Andy Murray and Lorraine Kelly.  Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister commented, "I am pleased to contribute my favourite recipe 'Cullen Skink' to the Think Pink Scotland Recipe Book.  This is a fantastic project which demonstrates the commitment of everyone involved in this very worthwhile cause".

Darren and Coco support the Appeal

When Darren Heeps was diagnosed with testicular cancer in March 2010 he decided he wanted to get involved supporting the Beatson Pebble Appeal.  So on a wet and windy October day Darren took on the Falkirk Wheel abseil with his cousin Jemma Simon and friend William Kane and raised over £650 for the appeal.  Darren’s dog, Coco, also came along to support him!  Darren commented, “My sister spotted a poster promoting the abseil at the Falkirk Wheel in aid of the Beatson Pebble Appeal and I thought this was a great opportunity to help give something back.  I am aiming to take on another abseil in 2011 to continue my support.”

Borden Road Ladies

Five ladies from Jordanhill have been working hard raising funds for the Beatson Pebble Appeal.  The ladies have organised a variety of events including a wine tasting evening, a book sale, a cookery masterclass with Jacqueline O’Donnell, owner of the Sisters restaurant, and a flower based quiz.   They have raised almost £3000 and show no signs of stopping! Jean Brown said “The five 'Borden Road Ladies' have been friends for many years and we were prompted to raise funds for the Beatson Pebble Appeal when two of our number developed breast cancer.  We have had a lot of fun fundraising and have had great support from family, friends and neighbours”.

Pinal’s Curry Night

Along with her colleagues from Dunbartonshire Council, Pinar Patel raised £3,000 for the Pebble Appeal.  Pinal was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and had been undergoing treatment at the Beatson. They organised a coffee evening and invited friends, family and colleagues.

Golf Match

The Clober Golf Club in Milngavie held a charity golf match in aid of local charity Cure Cancer Scotland.  Cure Cancer Scotland were raising money for the Beatson Pebble Appeal and hope to reach £10,000 very soon!  On the day, the Cure Cancer Shield was won by David Steele, a member of Clober Golf Club.  The match was followed by an evening disco, short auction and raffle and over £2,000 was raised.  Kay McFarlane, chairperson of Cure Cancer Scotland, thanked the club, players and everyone involved in supporting the event and making it such a success.

Ignis Asset Management 10K

Over 120 ladies ran in support of the Appeal in the 2009 Ignis Asset Management 10K generating a total of more than £12,000.  Oweny’s Entourage entered a team of over 80 runners who raised more than £10,000 for the appeal.

Charity Old Firm Match

Graeme Brunton and Gordon Scott from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) organised a charity ‘Old Firm’ football match at Lesser Hampden.  A total of £1152 was raised for the Appeal with ‘Rangers’ winning on the day!  Graeme said “we all know someone affected by cancer so this is such a great cause”.

Many thanks to Katrina and John Taylor who decided to forego the traditional favours at their recent wedding and instead gave all their guests a Beatson Pebble Appeal badge and made a donation to the appeal.
