Cancer Statistics
The Scale of the Problem
One in three people will develop cancer in their lifetime - and the current figure of 27,000 people diagnosed with cancer each year in Scotland will only grow as the population ages. In addition to this worrying statistic, Glasgow has the unenviable title of the "cancer capital of Europe".
It is therefore not surprising that a recent Cancer Research UK study showed that over a quarter of people said that cancer is their biggest fear, ahead of heart disease, murder, terrorism and avian flu, but many were unaware of how they could reduce their risk.
In Glasgow, the University, the NHS and Cancer Research UK have been working in partnership to advance care for cancer patients and ultimately to identify cures. Their vision is to develop a range of services and facilities that will together form a comprehensive cancer centre in the west of Scotland.
